Toots the Tattoo Lady ATC

2014-06-21 17.41.32

I spent the afternoon in my art studio making these fun Artist Trading Cards for our upcoming ATC Meeting on Wednesday, June 25th.

Our themes this month were Circus, Candy, Maya Angelo Quotes and/or “Salt” techniques.  I chose Circus and Salt as a technique to make my funny Tattoo Lady cards.

2014-06-21 16.43.01
I started by cutting down watercolor paper into 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 ATC sized cards.  Got out some kosher salt, Lumiere metallic gold acrylic paint, a Tim Holtz stamp, Versafine black ink and sheet of tattoo ladies printed on glossy ink jet paper.

2014-06-21 17.04.12

I painted the watercolor ATC’s with the gold metallic paint, spritzed them with water and then sprinkled salt over the wet paint.  I let these dry while cutting out my tattoo ladies.

2014-06-21 17.04.47

After the paint dried, I rubbed the salt off the watercolor paper to reveal this textured background.  The salt actually “pulled” up the paint as it dried.  I love the rusty metal look it gave the paper.

2014-06-21 17.06.29I then stamped the fun background stamp on to the ATC and painted the edges with turquoise acrylic paint.  I also painted some fun wood stars with the turquoise paint to add to the cards.

2014-06-21 17.41.32
Finished up my cards with a fun saying I printed on cardstock then cut into strips, inked and glued on to each card.  Added a bit of bling with some diamond glitter glue.  Got 16 made and ready to trade!

The Paper Pals Artist Trading Card Club meets the last Wednesday of each  month at 6pm.  We rotate our meeting locations between Thomas Hammer Coffee shop in Pullman, WA and Mikey’s Gyros in Moscow, ID.  The next meeting is this Wed. June 25th at Mikey’s Gyros – Main Street – Moscow, Idaho.  Free and open to any one over 18!

All About Artist Trading Cards!

2014-06-01 10.35.18

An Artist Trading Card or ATC is a small, baseball card sized
(2 1/2 x 3 1/2) original self-produced miniature work of art!  ATC’s can be made using any medium of your choosing, from stamping, collage, hand drawn, watercolor, fabric, digital and more.
There really are “No Rules” when it comes to making ATC’s besides the size requirement!  But…to this rule are appended a couple of conventions.

 2014-06-01 10.38.42
First, an ATC mustn't be sold, only exchanged, as the whole essence of these tiny works of art is about artists meeting (by correspondence or online if need be) and exchanging their works, thus meeting many artists and getting exposed to many personal styles.

2014-06-01 10.41.54

Second, on the back of each ATC the artist writes part or all of the following information: name, contact information, title of the ATC and number (1/8, 2/8...) if it's part of an edition OR if it is an original OR part of a series.

2014-06-01 10.36.28

By definition ATCs are made in limited numbers, often no more than one of a kind. Unique ATCs are called originals; sets of identical ATCs are called editions and are numbered; sets of ATCs that are based on one theme but that are different are called series. Don't be intimidated by the concept of small editions or originals: very few people are too picky about this. What most collectors really want are cards that were made with care. Based on that, numbers are meaningless.

2014-06-01 10.36.59

On the front of an ATC an artist creates an original work to showcase their art. Artist trading cards can be made in any medium and using any technique, whether it's painting, drawing, digital, stamping, mixed media or collage. You are really limited only by your imagination and materials.

Regular trading sessions can be organized by groups or clubs – like the Paper Pals ATC Club that has been around for several years.  Our local club meets once a month and alternates our meeting location between Thomas Hammer Coffee House in Pullman, WA and Mikey’s Gyros in Moscow, ID.

Face-to-face trading fits the original intention of artist trading cards because you're meeting new people, learning about new mediums and sharing your art in a very personal way!  Trading by post also happens and is a fun way to build a collection of Art from creators all over the world.

2014-06-01 10.34.43

You can find other ATC creators through groups such as the Flick Artist Trading Cards, ATCs For All and  Swap-Bot.  I have participated in all three of these online trading communities and have ended up with hundreds of ATC’s that fill two very large binders!

Happy Friday

Fridays are one of my favorite days.
Karen and I usually meet for coffee and catch up on business and each other.
My family tends to be not-as-slow-to-move on Friday mornings,
knowing the weekend is just around the corner.
I save my Friday afternoons to work in my studio or read a book.
Today I'm going to "pull" some prints with my Gelli Plate in preparation for my class next month. You can check out those details here.
I get so giddy when my table is piled high with supplies; the possibilities are endless.

Happy Friday!

RIP Maya Angelou

I'm sure you've heard by now that renowned writer and poet Maya Angelou has died.
Her words have spoken to me for many years, in ways I can't explain.
My heart is heavy, but one of my favorite quotes is also singing in my ear.
.
"The ship of my life may or not be sailing on calm and amiable seas. The challenging days of my existence may or may not be bright and promising. Stormy or sunny days, glorious or lonely nights, I maintain an attitude of gratitude. If I insist on being pessimistic, there is always tomorrow.
I am blessed."

Art Doodle Love

I've had a lot of trouble doing anything except being out in the sunshine these past few days, but I was able to complete a page in my Art Doodle Love book during our 12 hour Art Play Day last Saturday.
Here's the page before I started working on it. At first I thought it could be flowers, then smokestacks in a city. It finally came to me where I'd seen this "scene" before.

Here are my poor squashed bugs on the car windshield, with Mary Chapin Carpenter's song lyrics running through their minds. I always feel bad about those bugs, so this is a kind of homage to them.

What are you creating?
